The Advanced Manufacturing interest area, consisting of traditional manufacturing and consumer product organizations, is widely considered the backbone of the U.S. economy. These industries and businesses will undergo major shifts between now and 2020 when today's millennial generation joins the workforce. Numerous scientific, economic, and environmental forces will help determine the direction this collective will take as guided by today’s adults and tomorrow’s youth.

One newer innovation in manufacturing is 3M's solventless adhesive coating process, which helps reduce material consumption and fits in with the "go green" movement.
